We take a look at two deaths within the wealthy Carman Family that went unprosecuted.
Welcome back to Infraction Files, a part of The Files Network. Today, we're opening a file on a cold case that became a murder mystery, ultimately centered on a family fortune and a tragic end. We're looking at the suspicious deaths connected to the Carman family.
Our story begins on December 20, 2013, in wealthy Connecticut. John Chakalos, a successful real estate developer and patriarch of the family, was found fatally shot in his home. His grandson, Nathan Carman, was the last person known to have seen him alive. While the initial investigation stalled, suspicion lingered on Nathan. Why? Subsequent investigations revealed Nathan had purchased a semi-automatic rifle similar to the murder weapon just days before his grandfather's death. No charges were filed, and the murder remained unsolved.
Three years later, in September 2016, the file grew darker. Nathan, now 22, took his mother, Linda Carman, on a fishing trip aboard their 31-foot boat, the Chicken Pox, off the coast of Rhode Island. Days later, Nathan was found alone in a life raft near Martha's Vineyard. He claimed the boat took on water rapidly after a sudden mechanical failure, and his mother vanished. Linda was never found.
Authorities didn't buy the story. The Coast Guard noted several suspicious, recent repairs Nathan had made to the boat's hull and bulkheads just before the trip, repairs they alleged were designed to intentionally sink the vessel. The motive, according to federal prosecutors, was clear: Nathan sought to accelerate his inheritance of his grandfather’s substantial estate, which was worth millions.
This sequence of events, spanning nearly a decade, culminated in Nathan Carman’s arrest in May 2022. He was indicted on two counts: murdering his mother, Linda Carman, and fraud related to the death of his grandfather, John Chakalos, as part of a scheme to collect insurance and inheritance money.
But the court case never brought closure. In June 2023, while awaiting trial, Nathan Carman died by suicide in jail. All criminal charges were dismissed, ensuring that while the prosecution's theory remains compelling, the true nature of both John Chakalos's murder and Linda Carman's disappearance will forever remain outside the judgment of the law.
That closes the file on the Carman family deaths. Thank you for tuning into Infraction Files, a part of The Files Network.
