Officials say two service members were shot in an ambush-style attack in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
One of the victims, Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, age 20, has died, according to President Trump’s announcement Thursday night.
The second victim, Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, age 24, underwent surgery on Wednesday.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said Thursday that he remains in critical condition, and on Friday she added that, quote, “we still have hope.”
The suspect has been identified by the Trump administration as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national believed to have acted alone.
According to the CIA, Lakanwal previously worked with the U.S. government as part of a partner force in Kandahar.
Officials also confirmed he entered the United States in 2021.
