This week, NASA and SpaceX successfully launched a rescue mission utilizing the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, under the designation: Crew-10. So what's the objective? [BRIEF PAUSE] To safely return two astronauts who remained on the International Space Station beyond their initial schedule, due to TECHNICAL complications.
The SpaceX capsule successfully transported four astronauts to the International Space Station on Sunday, paving the way for Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams—who have been aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, since, June of 2024, —to return home.
The Dragon spacecraft, carrying the Crew-10 team, docked with the International Space Station at 4:04 a.m. UK time. This occurred approximately 29 hours after liftoff, which took place, atop a Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Upon arrival, Wilmore and Williams celebrated with the incoming crew members who will be taking their place on the station. The new crew includes NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, both experienced military pilots, as well as Japan's Takuya Onishi and Russia's Kirill Peskov, both former airline pilots.
This crew will remain aboard the International Space Station for six months, ensuring that four members of Crew-9—including Wilmore and Williams—can safely return to Earth.
President Donald Trump addressed the situation, expressing his commitment to the astronauts' safe return. He stated:
"We love you, and we're coming up to get you, and you shouldn't have been up there so long."
President Trump also acknowledged SpaceX's CEO Elon Musk for his role in preparing the rescue mission. Mr. Trump, said he was told by Elon that his company was quote "equipped" to complete the rescue mission.
